Blogging for myself
My second announcement this week is that I've decided to do a little experiment. I've decided to take part in the 'Blogging Goals' group project over at ProBlogger.net. It's also high time that I define my blogging goals for the next 30 days or so. It should be interesting, at the very least.
The main reason I blog is because I really enjoy writing, so my goal over the next 30 days is blog for myself.
For some, especially the professional bloggers out there (I've just recently joined your ranks), this may seem counter-intuitive, but I believe my reasoning is sound. If I enjoy what I am doing, it really shows in my writing. This leads to both higher-quality content and increased posting frequency. This, in turn, leads to return visitors. These visitors may tell their friends, who might check me out. Some of them will also become regular readers, and the cycle continues.
This word-of-mouth drives traffic. Without traffic, no one clicks any ads. Without those clicks, we don't make money.
So, yeah, I'm going to be selfish this month; I am going to blog for myself and I hope it shows. If you do what you love, everything else will follow :)

You've got it right, there. If you're doing it only for the money, it's a job. If it's a job, a thousand other people could do it instead of you.
If you're doing it for the fun, only you can write the way you do, and will differentiate yourself from 'the herd'.

Yea Rod,
On both announcements! Now you'll be as insane as all of us. I'm smiling for you. You're right to write for your own approval. If you don't like it. What make you think that I would?

Exactly. Even my career in IT has worked this way. Everything I do, I do because I enjoy it. I think it has shown, because I have consistently been moving forward in my career. Blogging is one more step forward :)

I'm a believer in passionate writting and people feeling that energy. I'minterested in seeing how your readership does in the next month.

I hope they make a movie, too. There have been all sorts of rumors of one, but every rumor seems to get shot down. There's some talk of a dream cast over on Orkut.com. Hopefully if anyone ever makes a movie, they'll take some of those suggestions into consideration :)
All I ever intended was to have fun. The adsense ads came much later than the blog, as an experiment. Then I ran across an opportunity to write for Linux World Net. Then, I got the opportunity to take on a second blog there (this one on Linux security). It's fun, and the money is a nice bonus :)
