Run!
This entry is probably going to kick of an ongoing series of posts. You see, I've been planning to run a marathon by the end of 2007 for a little while now. Only I've done absolutely nothing about it yet. So, instead of keeping it to the very few people who already know about this plan, I thought I'd share it with the world. It may just be the motivation I need to get going.
The marathon that I plan on running is the Columbus Marathon on October 21. This gives me six months for training. Considering that I'm a couch potato, not a runner, I hope this is enough time. I'm going to start my training tomorrow morning with my first run in forever - one mile on a local track. It's certainly not a long run, but it's further than I've run since high school gym class, many moons ago. And I'm choosing to start on a local track because the local roads are extremely hilly, and I don't want to discourage myself right out of the gate. I plan on them being my normal training grounds once I know I can do a mile on flat ground with no problems.
On the way to running my first marathon, hopefully with a time of 3:15 or less (which would qualify me for the big one in Boston, should I feel the need to punish myself twice), I'm going to be shooting a documentary of the experience with the help of my wife. The documentary is tentatively titled "Run! One Geek's Journey from Couch Potato to Marathon Runner." Catchy, huh? And for me, that journey starts now.
