OS/2

Back when Microsoft was releasing Windows 95, IBM had a much better 32-bit operating system in OS/2. Unfortunately for IBM, and possibly the rest of us, they failed to properly market their superior product for use on the home PC, and Microsoft won that war. Sure, IBM had the incredibly dedicated "Team-OS/2" evangelizing their product, but that doesn't compete with the OEM agreements meant that Windows was installed on the majority of PCs that were sold at the time. Being a fan, though not a regular user for some years, it was a sad day in 2005 when IBM officially announced that it would discontinue sales. So imagine my surprise when I discovered a product called eComStation by Serenity Systems International. According to their website, "eComStation is fully OS/2 compatible and will run your existing OS/2 applications!" While it's still a commercial product, there is a LiveCD demo version available. I may have to check it out some day.
