Why I like Problogger's group projects
Problogger has another group writing project going on this week. This time, it's top 5 lists. And what better way to celebrate the project than by giving the top five reasons I like Problogger's group writing projects?
1. The couple of times I've entered before, I've gotten spikes in traffic. Nothing to bring my little server to it's knees (or make my cable provider cut me off for excessive bandwidth), but there's always a definite spike in traffic.
2. Even when I haven't submitted my own entry for the project, I've surfed the entries and discovered at least a few blogs which I've added to my feed reader. Many of them I still read on a regular basis.
3. As the traffic has spiked, so have the incoming links. And the outgoing ones. It's all about sharing the link love.
4. There is an opportunity to gain readership. The traffic will drop by to normal levels after awhile, but there's a chance that someone, somewhere, will have found something of value in my blog and add me to their bookmarks or feed reader.
5. I know there are going to be many more eyes on my writing than normal, at least for a little while, so I concentrate a little more and my writing gets just a little better. So each project gives me an opportunity to grow as a writer.
Even though each blogger is allowed only one entry into the contest portion of the group writing project, and this is mine, I'm going to do a little experiment. I'm going to try to keep the "top 5" theme all week and see how things go.

"there's a chance that someone, somewhere, will have found something of value in my blog and add me to their bookmarks or feed reader." Very good point and a positive way of looking at the project. Thanks for sharing this!
Good luck on Friday, can't wait to see who wins the prize on Problogger! :)

Whoah. This blog runs on a server?

Jolynn - I'm not too concerned with winning the prize, because, by the standards I've set, I've already won :) Not that $1001 wouldn't come in handy... ;)
Eli - Yeah. Amazing, huh? But only if you count a Pentium 100 with 16MB of RAM and a 1 Gig HD and connected to the net via dialup a "server." OK. Not really. But that's what I used to run my site off of. LOL

Wow a dial up server. This is great.
This was my first problogger posting, but your top 5 make it worth repeating.

Yup. A server on dial-up. But this was like 1995, so my dialup account was free (I volunteered at the ISP), and no one else knew about it, so it was just there for my own personal use :)

Good post. I am a new blogger, feverishly attempting to learn as much as I can. 1 thing I have learned already is how great the Problogger group writing projects are and will be.

Thanks, JDJ. I've been at it for awhile, in one form or other, since before it was called "blogging." I've "met" a lot of great people along the way, and that's part of what Darrin's group writing projects are all about :)

Right, I know what you mean...however the lucky person will be receiving an even larger traffic influx (forget about the $$!). ;)
Either way, it's fun and gives you something to look forward to. Darren will be announcing on Sat. instead of Friday, btw.
There will be even more submissions to read today, so have fun! :)
All the best,
JoLynn

It's been lots of fun so far :) I've been trying to make it a point to comment on some of the blogs I've stumbled across, but there's just so much reading to get caught up on first ;)

Very nice! I am the writer of “Top 5 things to do in Istanbul” This was my first group activity, but i liked it very much.
http://meeting-continents.blogspot.com/2007/05/top-5-things-to-do-in-istanbul.html
Have you ever been to Istanbul which links east to west, and west to east like a weblink. Istanbul played such a critical role in the world politics and culture throughout the history.
Now i have a dream i would like to share with you and Darren Rowse. All the Probloggers should meet at Istanbul and join the 29th edition of the Eurasia Marathon on Sunday 28th of October, 2007.
Let’s meet where the continents meet : As the Istanbul Eurasia Marathon starts from the Anatolian side while taking the runners to the most beautiful spots of town, signing its name under a touristic attraction as well. The Bosphorus is one of the most beautiful spots on the world and as you run through it, history of the centuries run with you on the streets.
I joined the 28th Intercontinental Istanbul EurAsia Marathon on 5th of November, 2006 together with my friends, Joe and Suat San. We enjoyed the wonderful Bosphorus, and beautiful streets of Istanbul on a cold but sunny Sunday morning. The slogan for last year’s marathon was “let’s run for a non-smoking world”.
this was my blog post for last year’s marathon:
http://meeting-continents.blogspot.com/2006/12/intercontinental-eurasia-marathon.html
I would be happy to invite you to the 29th Intercontinental Istanbul Eurasia Marathon, the only marathon to run between two continents - Europe and Asia. Istanbul is one of the oldest settlements on the world. What about participating in the 29th EurAsia Marathon in 2007 which takes place in the most beautiful places of a wonderful city that has been the capital of three empires ?
You may find details about the marathon here:

Please let me know if you are interested.
Have a nice day!

Glad you've enjoyed the post, Mert. And wow, what an invitation! But, unfortunately, I am no marathon runner - yet ;) I'm just your average overweight computer geek, except I've convinced myself that I can train for the Columbus, Ohio, marathon and shed some pounds in the process. And maybe shoot a documentary about my experiences in the process. Since I've never been a runner before, and can barely call myself one now, I can't really think beyond one race. I'm adding the Istanbul marathon to the list of things I've gotta do during my lifetime, though.
