Wintermute's Technical Advise
Are there any old-time 740 (formerly 614, before the split) BBSers in the house? If so, you may recognize the title of this post from the name of one of the subs from my sister's board, The Far Side BBS, where I was co-sysop and technical advisor.
Back in the day, I thought I knew a lot about computers. I figured that since I was smart, anything I didn't know I could find out, so she set up the sub where people could ask computer questions, and I'd help the best I could. I've since learned that I knew a little more than average about computers, but I was right on the second point. The trick to a career in IT isn't knowing a bunch of trivial stuff about computers. It's knowing the stuff you need on a daily basis, and and having a good methodology for finding the rest.
It's funny how a couple of comments attached to my last entry about Greenapple, and the resulting email, can trigger a long-forgotten memory like that. It's also made me realize that I absolutely love helping people, even though I occasionally suffer tech burnout and was slightly less than sane when I finally left Greenapple ;)
It's because of this exchange that I think I've finally found the niche for my blog. I've decided to bring "Wintermute's Technical Advise" back from the dead. If you're having computer problems, and want help from someone with a slightly above average knowledge of computers, feel free to contact me via the link towards the bottom of the sidebar. If I'm able to find answers for you, I'll post an entry on the blog addressing the issues I'm able to help with. I may add a donation link to those posts, but for the most part I'm doing this because I enjoy it. I figure that the blog is low-traffic enough at this point that I shouldn't get killed too badly by the resulting email. I just hope that there's enough traffic to get the ball rolling :) Once I confirm that any of my suggestions worked, I'll start by posting the solutions from that email exchange.

Word.
I've been realizing lately that the better I get at what I want to do, the less I actually get to do it.
Those people who caution about the two-sided nature of success....they ain't lying!
