Broken Links

Broken Links
I have started using a plugin to clean up some of the broken links on the site. Many of the links that were found are quite old, and some merely needed updated from http to https. Others had .com when they should have had .org. Still others are long gone from the internet. And some were just fine, and I have no idea why they were marked as broken. Once I complete this cleanup of broken links, I will likely point the ones that are gone forever to the Wayback Machine, if available, or turn the plugin’s CSS back on so that broken links are apparent.

On a related note, I removed the Links page, as all it was getting was the occasional spam that needed moderated. I originally set the page up as part of doing strictly “Ghosts of Ohio” with the site, when it sorta made a good idea.

Cleaning up the sidebar is my next priority. What should go? What should stay? Should any of it be moved to the footer instead? Let me know in comments!

Expanding features

As you may have noticed, I’ve been busily expanding features. First, you may notice in the sidebar that you can donate either via Bitcoin or PayPal. Also, I found a phpBB style that I like, so the forums are about ready to go. There’s also a new Chat feature. Finally, I’ve also added a Links section.

I’ve considered adding a Wiki as well, but I’m not entirely certain how useful that would be. Feel free to suggest other features as well 🙂

Usage Statistics

Over at Successful Blog, Liz mentions “One truth about blogging is that you can never know for sure where a post might take you.” I thought I’d comment here, because I recently discovered how true that is.

It all started not only with my May 10 entry on Links, but with the discovery of Successful Blog. When I discovered it, I did what I always do when I find something interesting; I added it to Bloglines. This, in turn, caused it to show up in my blogroll (which displays the 20 most recently updated blogs that I read through Bloglines via a PHP script I hacked together). Liz graciously acknowledged her addition to my blogroll and promptly heaped a ton of much-appreciated attention on that May 10 post.

In case you’re wondering where I’m going with this ramble, I was starting to wonder too. But to get back on track, after the initial flury of hits to the site and everything has calmed back down (I was up to 10 times normal trafic for awhile!), it appears that my readership has doubled! Looks like I had excellent timing for the site redesign 🙂
