Finally!

I know, I know. I've moved the blog back to Blogger for now. Strange thing, though. I could swear I still had a blog there, but it was gone. Go figure. At any rate, I have my Wordpress blog completely backed up, so it's just a matter of finding some time to import everything back in.

Resurecting our two favorite dead girls

logo_phpBBAs everyone should aware, Miles approached me because his engineer was having issues restoring the official LGPedia. The engineer seemed to think that the copy of the database Miles had provided was missing some tables. So I provided both the files and the database for the unofficial version I had managed to pluck from archive.org. Once he had those restored, he still couldn't get the database Miles had provided to work correctly, so Miles approached for assistance, asking if I could log in to the server and check things out. Instead, I asked for the database files and and html/php files he may have. Did I have an ulterior motive in asking that? Why yes. Yes, I did. ;) Turns out, what was provided to me contains a lot more than just LGPedia, which is exactly what I had hoped. So, after restoring all the databases to a tiny server at home, I got to work resoring LGPedia. After a little work, I was successful. The "skin" was broken, so I used a default one instead. But the data is newer than what archive.org has, so, despite looking a little different, the original LGpedia should be coming back Real Soon Now.

Also in the files sent to me was a database dump of the forums circa 2007. So, I checked the phpBB version according to the database dump, and tracked down that ancient version using a bit of Google-fu. And, just like it was 2007, I've spent way more time than I'd like to admit browsing the restored forums. I'm sure when the Pedia officially comes back, the forums will, too :)

Also, the are database dumps for Harpers Globe, a couple versions of Umbrella (which was proprietary, so, without the source code to the site itself, will take some real effort to resurrect), n1ckopedia, Inside LG15, and more. The most notable of which is the old LG15.com wordpress site which hosted the comments board. It appears to have used some custom plugins with dealing with videos, so the greatest value is in the comments themselves.

At any rate, I am working to restore what I can, and, once restored, will move everything to the server Miles is using. I am calling this the "lonelygirl15 resurrection project," but I could just as easily call it the "CassieIsWatching resurrection project," as it is my love of CiW that is driving this effort.

For a preview of my efforts, you can go to my little home server for a list of links to what has been and is in the process of being restored. The links will either go to the official server that Miles is using, if it has been copied over yet, or to a local copy, possibly a work-in-progress version, on my little home server. So, please be gentle on the server. while browsing :) Oh, and, regardless of what Miles does with the "official" versions, the restored versions will remain on my little home server. I've just been unlinking each site and linking to a redirect script as I get them moved over.

I'm excitedly waiting for Miles to make an official announcement about LGPedia and the forums. In the meantime, enjoy the preview. :)

LG15chat clue

[caption id="attachment_56292" align="alignleft" width="207"]LG15chat clue LG15chat clue[/caption]

Looks like our friend @WeTheEnd is at is again with another LG15Chat clue:

From April 1st's chat logs:
= 09:39:59 --> | LG15Chat [b862b8fb@gateway/web/freenode/ip.184.98.184.251] has joined #LG15chat
= 09:40:49 < LG15Chat>| 6/5/15
= 09:41:23 < LG15Chat>| The date to remember.

Notice the similarity to the last time they were about to launch something? ;) So, just to be sure, I decided to GeoLocate the IP address:
wintermute@bbs:~$ geoiplookup -f /usr/share/GeoIP/GeoLiteCity.dat 184.98.184.251
GeoIP City Edition, Rev 1: US, AZ, Arizona, Peoria, N/A, 33.580601, -112.237396, 753, 623

Hmmm... Seems we know a certain PM near there whom I outed last time around because they don't know how to hide an IP address in IRC ;) Maybe this time around, they'll remember Freenode has a limit on line length in their web client, so when they start posting morse code, the end isn't chopped of. Even if they forget, WE remember, so we won't get so confused like last time around. ;)

The Skeptics Guide to Conspiracy Theories

skeptics_My wife just picked up a copy of The Skeptics Guide to Conspiracy Theories [affiliate link] for me, and it seems hilarious so far. You just know that any book that starts out "I have to write this fast because they're on to me" or somesuch is gonna be great. And the "notes" in the margins by a paranoid "reader" are especially funny. Loving it so far! :)

Redesign on hold

Just wanted to let everyone know that the site redesign that I had planned on doing is on hold indefinitely. I've decided to wait until the Miles gets the official LGpedia back up before messing with it. That way we can avoid any LGpedia downtime :) In the meantime, I'm playing with some theme ideas on a test version of the site.

Zombie Dice

zombie_diceThe other day, my wife and I decided check out The Guardtower, which is a local gaming store that we haven't been to for ages. While we were there, checking out the stuff from Steve Jackson Games, we decided to pick up Zombie Dice [affiliate link]. We haven't been able to quit playing the game since. We've played it so much, that I dreamt that I was a zombie and people kept getting away from me. If that's not an endorsement for a game, I don't know what is ;)

Exciting news about LGpedia!

Picture 2 copy
I have some exiting news about LGpedia that I hope is OK to share. If not, I apologize now.

Miles approached me for an assist with getting the official LGpedia back on-line! He put me in contact with his engineer, and I sent him everything I have in the hopes that it helps him get LGpedia back up and running again :)

Now, once it's back up, I do not plan on taking the unofficial one down. I simply plan on redirecting users to the official version automatically, but leaving the unofficial version where it is. I also plan on mirroring the official version every now and then to keep my unofficial version in sync, even though no one will have access to it. This way, should something happen at some point and the need arise, I can remove the redirect and the unofficial version will be immediately available again.

LGpedia finally fixed?

I think I've finally stumbled upon the issue with LGpedia being so slow. It seems that there was an errant DNS issue, and DNS was being resolved in a round-robin fashion. Now that the bad entry should never be returned, everything should be much faster. Sorry it took so long to figure out... Was working on something else when I discovered it ;)

Goodbye, Huntington Bank!

A few weeks ago, I thought I'd give Huntington Bank a go, so I opened an account and started the process of moving my direct deposit over and all that fun stuff. Yesterday, I get a voicemail from their fraud prevention department; they saw someone log in using tor and froze everything. I call them, verify myself satisfactorily, and am asked if I use tor. A) How is that your business, and B) see A. But I say yes, I use tor, but not for all traffic. After some back and forth bickering, and an attempted lecture of the dangers of using tor (tor is no more dangerous than the open internet, morons), they request I go to a local branch to have them set up a new username/password for me. I do so, the local branch calls the fraud prevention folks, and they refuse to release my account until their security department reviews it. WTF?! So *I* call them back, from the bank branch, and they will release the funds if I'm closing my account, but not if I just need access to them. Double WFT?!?! You'll give me my money if I close my account, but not access to my account, or my money, if I want to keep it open?!?! In what world does that make ANY sense?! So, of course I'm going to close my account. I mean, someone managed to breach it within weeks of being opened, even though I use best practices? Sorry. Not sure I want to bank with you? Then refuse to give me access to my own account because I admitted to using tor?! Even though I don't use it for online banking?! (as a matter of fact, I use it to hide my whereabouts when playing Alternate Reality Games, not that it's anyone's business WHY I use tor.)

So, the person at the branch is helpless to do anything, so starts the process of closing my account. Except my funds are frozen, and she has no idea how to deal with it. So I have to hand MY cellphone to the lady and let the morons at fraud prevention walk her through. During the process, they apparently ask for some sort of security credentials... which she tells them WHILE WITHIN EARSHOT OF ME. So, she's incompetent at closing my account AND at security best practices (hell, I could have dialed a friend and had them claim to be in fraud prevention, and social engineered access to my account, for all she knew... or at least, to her credentials.. which I would now know if I were less than honest and had made an attempt at remembering... Oh... Did I mention she typed her PC login/password while her keyboard was within plain sight of me, too... So I could have that, too, if I wanted...) So, I did what any tech savvy disgruntled customer does... I start tweeting the experience while I'm waiting the 30 minutes AFTER my funds have been given to me for her to be walked through closing my account... At which point, she got extremely paranoid... Are you recording me? No, I'm posting to the internet. Not my number?! That's a federal thing... No, not your number, which anyone in line could have heard and memorized as well...

The TL;DR of it is, thanks, Huntington Bank, for being a bunch of morons and losing me as a customer. It's your own fault. Your tellers need to learn security best practices. Your fraud prevention needs to learn a little about tor and quit attempting to spread FUD about it. And your security department should be a 24/7 operation; you're a bank, for %deity%'s sake! Thank %deity% I wasn't on vacation outside Huntington's footprint, because I'd be stuck there.
